Litchfield County Roundup: Gilbert/Northwestern football/Torrington volleyball win

WINSTED >> Gilbert/Northwestern football beat SMSA/University/Classical 38-14 Saturday afternoon in a game featuring two safeties by the Yellowjacket defense in the first quarter and G/N’s first passing touchdowns on the way to the win at Van Why Field.

G/N followed its first-quarter defensive exploits with 21 points by the offense in the second quarter.

Billy Komons (18 carries/83 yards) ran for a touchdown; Gabe Schwartz threw one to Austin Gagnon; and Brad Lissy threw another to Eric Claman.
Lissy, G/N’s junior quarterback, was 7-for-15 on the day for 133 passing yards, the Yellowjackets’ best day by far in the air.

Leading 25-14 at the half, G/N put the game away in the fourth quarter with two more running touchdowns, by Komons and Schwartz.

G/N is 6-1; SMSA is 3-4.

Girls Volleyball

NVL Tournament First Round

No. 1 Torrington 3, No. 8 St. Paul 0 (25-5, 25-8, 25-22) >> The Red Raiders (20-1) breezed through the NVL Tournament first round at Torrington High School with solid efforts by Jayleen Colon (19 assists, 2 kills, 7 digs, 4 aces); Jolie Fox (11 kills); Nina Lestrud (7 kills, 1 ace); and Carissa Carbone (4 kills, 7 digs, 5 aces).

Sophia Penisse (4 kills, 2 aces); Annie Sullivan (2 kills, 4 aces); and Bianca DeLemia (2 aces) led the Falcons (8-12).

Torrington plays No. 5 Naugatuck in the tournament semifinals Tuesday at Naugatuck High School.

Boys Soccer

NVL Tournament First Round

No. 3 Woodland 2, No. 6 Torrington 0 >> The Red Raiders lost at Woodland High School Saturday afternoon. They resume play next week in the Class L State Tournament.

Canterbury 3, Westminister 1 >> Connor Amsley scored twice for Canterbury (9-2-1), Jacob Finkel once, all in the first half.

Jeffrey Guliano put Westminister (0-10) on the board 15 seconds into the second half

Field Hockey

Canterbury 3, Rye Country Day 0 >> Sara Bouwman scored twice at Rye Country Day. Emma Gambradella had the third goal for Canterbury (10-3-1).

Rye is 10-6-1.
